Surrender Dorothy
|
| | | A dark comedy of gender manipulation. Features: DVD The problem: Trevor, age 26, is a loner obsessed with women. But he's so afraid of them he can barely speak in their presence. He needs companionship, a lover, someone to trust, someone to obey him. Lahn, 22, is a smack addict and slacker. He likes women, but not as much as heroin. He stole his dealer's stash and now needs a place to hide, someone to conceal and protect him.... The solution: Trevor can hide Lahn, lie for him, provide for him... The price: But only if Lahn becomes Dorothy, Trevor's perfect woman! The boldest psychosexual drama since Blue Velvet, Surrender Dorothy is the compelling and controversial tale of two heterosexual men who come together in need and begin one of the most unusual relationships on film. Cross-dressing, gender-bending and drug abuse are the norm as Lahn becomes Dorothy for the price of a fix. But is it enough for Trevor. A grittily acted piece that mixes intense drama and black comedy, Surrender Dorothy takes all your perceptions of human behavior and turns them upside-down and inside-out! "...startling, gripping, disturbing, and out on the film making edge." James Berardinelli's ReelViews "A startling, brilliantly unsettling tale!" Planet Out "A bizarre journey into sexual obsession--strange and creepy...genuinely unsettling." Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
Editor's Note
Kevin DiNovis wrote, directed, and starred in this 16mm feature, a startling achievement for a first time director. Set in Philadelphia, the film follows Trevor (Pryor), a 27 year old busboy whose paralyzing fear of women has forced him to lead a solitary life. However, his fears turn into something much different when he takes in Lanh, a heroin addict looking for a place to hide out after stealing from a local drug dealer. Trevor allows him to stay at his apartment and agrees to score drugs for him, but only on the condition that he allow Trevor to transform him into the perfect woman. As Lanh succumbs to Trevor's demands, his obsession becomes more and more bizarre, causing the relationship between the two men to spiral out of control. Darkly comic and severely disturbing, SURRENDER DOROTHY is a gripping and intense film whose surreal logic and haunting images are at once unsettling and fascinating.
