Author Bio
Joseph Campbell
Although he never pursued a doctorate, Joseph Campbell is known as a premier scholar on world myths, and has published a huge number of books, several of which, particularly "The Hero with a Thousand Faces", have become standard texts in university courses. Campbell received a B.A. from Columbia University in 1925, and an M.A two years later. He studied in Europe, reading medieval literature at the University of Paris, and became familiar with the works of Jung, which were to influence him greatly. In 1934, he joined the faculty of Sarah Lawrence College, an institution he was to be associated with for most of his life. He read widely in world literature, edited books on James Joyce, the Upanishads, and "The Portable Jung" for the Viking Portable Library. His conversations with Bill Moyers, broadcast on PBS as "The Power of Myth" and later collected in a book, made Cambell a popular figure. His advice to his students and the world was to "follow your bliss."
